This is a comparative course delving into film representations of the experiences of war in modern human history. Students will become historical film critics exploring the issues, experiences, horrors, and violence of modern warfare. While film is a relatively new artistic medium, a wide variety of historical subjects have been treated in films on warfare. We will examine feature films and short films from around the globe dealing with warfare from the eighteenth century to today. Key events depicted in our films will include: the American Revolution, Zulu War, First World War, Second World War, Cold War, Algerian War, Vietnam War, and Iraq War.
